Instructions for a buccal swab sample
merA buccal swab sample is used to obtain DNA for various types of forensic genetic tests. Buccal swab samples are used, among other things, in paternity or maternity investigations, family studies or twin analyses. Here you can see how to collect a buccal swab sample and how to order a sampling kit.

Here’s how to do it
1. Mark the FTA card in the designated place with your name and social security number. Do not touch the pink filter paper intended for the DNA sample.
2. Remove the buccal swab from the protective bag. Do not touch the foam tip.
3. Hold the plastic handle of the swab and place the foam tip against the inside of the cheek. Rub against the cheek 6-7 times. Repeat with the other side of the foam tip against the inside of the other cheek.
4. If possible, try to rub the roof of your mouth and under your tongue to get as much saliva as possible. Remove the swab from your mouth.
5. Lift the protective paper on the FTA paper, you will then see a pink filter paper.
6. First press one side of the foam tip of the swab against the marked circle and then the other side. Roll the foam tip from side to side but do not rub.
7. The color of the paper will change to white when the sample has been transferred to the paper.
8. Throw away the swab. The swab must not be inserted into the mouth after it has been in contact with the FTA paper! Let the paper dry for one hour at room temperature.
9. Fold the protective paper over the FTA paper and place it together with the sample collection certificate in an envelope and send to the address below.
